      Life expectancy at birth, male (years) in Jamaica was reported at 68.97 years in 2023, according to the World Bank collection of development indicators; so considering Mike's chosen vocation, he did OK.

      I'd met him, and he was a very nice guy and a worthy Hall of Famer.

        McCallum was a formidable force who should have received more accolades! Rest in peace, Caribbean champ!

        But I am not so sure that him not fighting the Kings had to do with ducking, at least at their best level. At their top, they all faced very difficult challenges left and right. For some context, when Hearns fought Duran, McCallum was still in his third year as a boxer and hadn't fought any real contenders.

        I do think that the late 80s versions of Hearns, Duran, and Leonard definitely ducked McCallum and weren't that interested in fighting the toughest challengers out there. With Hagler, it's a bit different: he retired before McCallum fought Curry, so that would have been a total pipe dream.

        Hagler vs. McCallum would have been a boxing feast, definitely a fight to remember though. I see Leonard edging out McCallum on points perhaps controversially, but I see McCallum knocking out Hearns in the later rounds. Aside from having an excellent defense, he also had a granite chin.

          Some of you guys on here are crazy to make the claim that the Fantastic 4 (Duran-SRL-Hearns-Benitez) plus Hagler ducked McCallum when the fact is that the 4Kings+Hagler were already on their way out (past prime, past their best weight class or retiring) by the time McCallum had arrived on the scene.

          With all that being said, R.I.P. Champ.

            Mike’s first fight at middleweight against Kalambay was in 88. Anyone mind explaining quite how Hagler, a career middleweight, ducked him when his last fight against Leonard was in 87?

            A lot of misinformation in these posts.
