OSAKA, Japan – Yudai Shigeoka has provided an update on the condition of his younger brother Ginjiro after he underwent brain surgery earlier this week.
Ginjiro suffered an acute subdural hematoma (bleed on the brain) after his defeat to Pedro Taduran for the IBF minimumweight title. Shigeoka collapsed in the ring after completing the full 12 rounds and was stretchered out by the medical team. This is not the first time this has happened, as an almost identical situation occurred in Shigeoka’s last contest, a stoppage defeat again to Taduran.
On Tuesday (May 27) it was revealed that Shigeoka had undergone a craniotomy, a surgical procedure where part of the skull is temporarily removed in order to treat the brain bleed. Shigeoka’s brother, former WBC minimumweight champion Yudai took to social media today (May 29) to provide an update on his brother’s condition.
The post, translated from Japanese, read: “I'm sorry to have worried everyone about Ginjiro. It's the fifth day since he was hospitalized. They say the next week will be the most critical. At first he needed a respirator, but now he can breathe on his own, and other indicators don't seem to be getting worse. If he can get through the next two or three days, the doctor will be able to tell us about the next step. I’m sure everyone’s support and wishes are reaching Gin [Shigeoka]. He’s trying desperately to live. Gin has never given up before. He’s strong, so he’ll be fine. I believe in him too. I’II let you know if anything else happens so that you can feel at ease. Please leave it to me. Please continue to pray for him. Thank you.”
