Featherweight Vic Pasillas painted a picture in the ring on Thursday night at The Avalon in Hollywood, California, proving once again he is a contender.

Pasillas stopped Carlos Jackson in the seventh round of their bout, which was scheduled for eight rounds. The time of the stoppage was 2:05.

Pasillas, originally from Los Angeles, relocated to Redwood City, California, ten years ago, but had a triumphant homecoming. Pasillas’ hand speed presented problems for Jackson from the opening bell. Jackson, 36, was cut over his right eye at the end of the first round from the 32-year-old Pasillas’ punch. A straight left from Pasillas stumbled Jackson in the third round, though Jackson would recover. The two fighters appeared to clash heads in round four as Pasillas grimaced. Pasillas put Jackson on the ropes at the end of round five as a barrage of punches nearly halted the contest with referee Rudy Barragan watching the action closely. A right hook from Pasillas knocked Jackson down in the seventh round. A series of punches followed as the referee stepped in to halt the bout.

Pasillas improves to 18-1 (11 KOs), Jackson has now lost two fights in a row, falling to 20-3 (13 KOs).

Featherweight Jose Ramirez of Tucson, Arizona, pulled off an upset win, knocking out Jessie Mandapat of Los Angeles in the third round of a bout scheduled for eight. The time of the stoppage was 1:47. Ramirez took the fight on short notice and landed a left hook that dropped Mandapat in the third round. Ramirez dropped Mandapat for a second time with a straight left from the southpaw stance. Ramirez closed the show with a straight left followed by a right hook that saw referee Thomas Taylor halt the contest.

The 21-year-old Ramirez improves to 8-3 (7 KOs), while Mandapat, 26, suffers his second loss of his career and stands at 9-2-1 (5 KOs).

In an all-action fight, women’s strawweight Brook Sibrian of Montebello, California, outlasted Rubi Gutierrez of Saltillo, Mexico via a six-round unanimous decision. The scores were 60-54, 60-54, and 59-55.

Sibrian, 32, landed a right hand in the third round that forced Gutierrez to the ropes and changed the course of the fight. Sibrian’s power proved to be the difference in the fight.

Sibrian improves to 7-2 (3 KOs), while the 19-year-old Gutierrez dips to 5-2-1.

Welterweight Ricardo Ruvalcaba of Ventura, California, won an eight-round Luis Alberto Veron of Buenos Aires, Argentina. All three scores were 80-72.
