    Roger "Black Mamba" Mayweather

Much of the talk about "Uncle Roger" has been about his work as a trainer and his recent outside the ring activities. It is often forgotten that he was also a very talented boxer who possessed one of the best right hands in boxing at the time.

He also had a terrible chin which made his fights all the more entertaining to watch:

Didn't the ref get punched in the Pea fight?

Excellent fighter was Mayweather, shame about his chin.

He Boxed very well against Paz, gave Chavez a much better fight at 140. Chavez did not seem to have the same pop there as 130 though.

I had to laugh when he got knocked out by Pendleton though He tired dramatically in that for some reason, i dont know if he had stamina issues as a fighter but his stamina when through the floor in that fight.

One think i like most about Roger Mayweather was his poise in the ring, he reminded me of Hearns or Holmes with the poise he had, he had a great left hand to, his jab was extremely good.

Whitaker schooled the man though. Tyszu fought a shell in a terrible fight.

Yes he did, by Pernell Whitaker, and the referee took it without problems. Roger would have knocked him out though.

Yeah Roger gets little to no recognition on this site as a fighter. He was a dangerous fighter though, and quite capable of stopping class opponents. The Pendleton fight was funny....the battle of the big right hands. Brutal knockout too....the equivalent of Mercer/Morrison or Cooney/Norton at lighter weights. Pendleton was quite underrated as well.

Yeah for sure, ironically enough that right hand was probably the one thing keeping him in the fight with Whitaker, albeit Whitaker won clearly imo.

apart from his right hand, he had a lot of boxing ability and was solid defensively too. I was very impressed with him when he fought Vinny Pazienza.
he even socked Lou Duva in the face after the fight, hehe.

Sammy Serrano was pretty highly rated when Roger beat him, unless Im mistaken.

Serrano was an underrated super featherweight with a total of 13 defenses of his title.

He led a wild lifestyle outside of the ring however and was already on the decline by the time he fought Mayweather, despite holding onto his title still.

Roger fought a great fight though and at that point of his career it seemed he would go onto become a great. He did go onto accomplish quite a lot but his chin let him down in many occasions.

After the Pazienza fight Roger said his brother Floyd had helped him improve upon his defense in preparation for the fight. That defense also helped him last until the 10th round against Chavez.

Roger said the hardest hitter he ever faced was Rafael Pineda. He said he thought he was in control of the fight until the lights went out suddenly.

It's interesting to read about fighters and who they deem to be the hardest hitters they faced. Sometimes they change their answers depending on the time/place/whatever. I can think of Wayne McCullough noting Erik Morales, when he faced some other big hitters like Hamed and Scott Harrison. James Toney has said both Iran Barkley, "nobody hit me like him (Barkley)" or something to that effect. I've also read that he said Merqui Sosa was the hardest hitter.

You know it's interesting because you'd never think that Pineda would be the guy Mayweather named when speaking on that subject. Chavez, Tszyu, Pendleton, etc...all of those guys could crack.
