    Gene Fullmer’s Reverse Cross Guard

Or as it’s also been called, the Dracula guard.

Why are they trying to make it appear Fullmer avoided rabbit punching, when he landed more illegal punches than any fighter I can think of? All they did was show a few selected clips under the misrepresentation that Fullmer was so adept at avoiding throwing rabbit punches, when in reality he threw more rabbit punches than an MMA fighter. I already knew that about his guard and weird jab. The only down jab I know of.

Other than that I think he was a great or near great practitioner. But I will never deny he was quite dirty. Count the rabbit punches, as I once tried to in his four Robinson in his 4 fights with Robinson. In fact, I remember now I did write the numbers down and I can almost guarantee you will lose count. I will retrieve them after I have had about 12 hours sleep. A better interpretation might be that about 30% of his rabbit punches miss and accidentally land legally. To be fair, he also threw legitimate, legal lug busters quite often, and sometimes it is difficult to see if he landed a rabbit punch or a barely legal blow.

Actually, here is that list now. It is all four fights round by round.

He did have a very weird and ugly jab. But effective for his specific style.

As for the rabbit punching…yes, he could be very rough and dirty.

MoonCheese , wasn’t there a bareknuckle fighter who used a similar guard? Maybe Jack Slack? Or was it someone else?

I am pretty sure Fullmer could not get away with the rabbit punching under today's enforcement. The telling thing is, I never saw him warned once in all his fights I have watched. That highlights the difference between standards of the two eras. Today's refs would put something of a straight jacket on Gene and his style.

A lot of fights on home turf with familiar names as judges and referees.

ooo! I'm not sure I ever knew, but I'll have a go through my notes and then if not there make an attempt to answer this question.

Shoulder, bro, thank you! It has been a nice long time since I have been motivated to figure out any sort of who was the first kind of stuff. If there is any connection between Gene's Cross and those who came prior I'll do my best to find it, or explain why these maybe merely coincidence, probably a bit of both. I do not ****ing know and that is what makes this exciting.

              **** yeah champ.

Fuller was never docked many points that I aware of nor did he low blow guys often. In his day rabbit punching fouls were seldom called. But he was extremely tough, very durable, fairly skilled, and active.

9 or 10 sports reporter picked Robinson to win tonight. Gene's reply, 9 of them are wrong! Gene went on to win that night. Only stopped once in 64 pro fights, and it was his last.

I ran across a preflight article, Dempsey-Willard, where the fighters thought rabbit-punches were acceptable (because unavoidable) but that kidney shots were considered foul (and unsportsmanlike.)

                  To each generation, it's own.

From Dempsey's POV Fullmer is OK, but Roy Jones Jr. is a cheat.

Stopped once, in his last fight? So you are saying his 2nd fight with SRR was his last.
