    Big John Tate

Former Heavyweight Champion of the World Big John Tate.. Never mentioned on Boxing Forums. Yet i would rather put on a tape of a Big John Tate fight than many other Heavyweight Champions when i feel like watching boxing..

Have you watched Big John Tate?

What are your opinions on Big John Tate?

He's one we lost to the streets, as simple as that!

I watched him, live back then and a few times since. He was a good boxer. After Weaver and Berbick, the word on him was that he didn't have a good chin but I always thought it was more of an endurance problem. He stood up to the punches thrown by Weaver and Berbick in the early rounds. He also did good against punchers Kallie Knoetzee and Coetzee.

Big raw boned, not the sharpest tool in the shed but had a decent instinct for the game. Could have been decent, never would have been a great fighter but strong kid with some skills. I hope it doesn't sound ****** but if you kind of took bone crusher and made him a little more rough in the edges.....

Another one of the countless 80s heavyweights that had a promising career only to be derailed

His last second KO loss to Weaver was memorable...

You don't see many face first KO's...Particularly ones that pull out a fight in the waning seconds...unforgettable...

That fight ruined Tate. He was only 25, but never beat a top 20 contender afterwards.

What Ray said, but also the Weaver fight did something to him, and they probably shouldn't have put him in with Berbick so soon afterwards. At some point, would have probably crossed paths with Cooney, Page, and Dokes, and probably would have lost to two of them, but would've had a very good career if he stayed on course.

He was not the guy to watch in his day. I remember being bored with him when I saw him fight. Maybe I missed some good ones. I don't know anything about his personal life.

I thought the Weaver fight was a monumental bore until Johnny got drilled, fifteen rounds of waiting for something to happen, which it finally did. You could not pay me to watch that fight again at my age, but I would watch the fifteenth anytime.

Very machine-like but underlying it was fragility.

He was a nice guy who was probably a bit like Rid**** Bowe in being playful and not fully dedicated most of the time -- liked his junk food as I recall.

I met him some years later at a few amateur events, a coach had found him living on the streets and taken him in. He was working with some kids and it was kind of sad but he was a nice guy, sweet, and very gracious.

                    RIP big fella.
