What are your thoughts regarding a fight between Gerry Cooney and Mike Weaver ? Who would you favor ? I remember there being some talk of this fight first before Cooney eventually fought Holmes. To me it was somewhat risky for Cooney as if he lost, would blow a huge payday against Holmes. However by winning, could make the Holmes fight even bigger than it was. Putting aside all that ,Weaver was a slow starter and Gerry just the opposite. Then again Weaver had shown alot of improvement and toughness in winning the title from Tate and knocking out Coetzee in his first defense. What happens in this fight ? I was a Weaver fan back then but I think Cooney was all wrong for him.

Fan of both, and Cooney should've taken that fight before Holmes, but got injured and then DKing comes calling and the rest history.

Would have been a good fight. I could see Cooney putting Weaver through hell early on. Weaver had a habit coming back and beating fighters that were possibly better than him. Would have been interesting to see if this happened.

I actually don't think it would have been that competitive. Sure, it was risky. Boxing is always like Russian Roulette, but at least the odds are in your favor 5-1.
Cooney and Holmes truly are the Tale of Two Cities.
