    Naseem Hamed Career Recap



    Fan film by me.

    In recent years a lot of people only seem to be able to remember the Barrera fight.

    Even the Kelley fight seems to get forgotten and the fight with Augie Sanchez was just as good in my opinion.

    He had some good wins against Bungu and Tom Johnston but he never beat a top 10 P4P opponent which seems to get a lot of focus. To be fair I think he did beat a fair few B+ level fighters.

    His clowning in his early fights was both detestable and yet also strangely compelling, he made Leonard look like a terminator focused on the job of beating Duran in comparison.

    Where would you put him in terms of all time great featherweights?

    Shooting from the hip I think he'd probably land in that 10-15 range all time featherweights. I'd have to look at guys like Canzonerri and Arguello, who I feel were better fighters but split their work over other weights, and see if they did enough work at feather to warrant being ahead of him.

      - -In HOF, and in terms of talent and natural attributes he was a one off.

      In Terms of career, great though strangely lacking his full potential.

        Talent wise top 10. His power was legit. Manny Steward rated him the hardest punching featherweight he'd ever seen.

        Shame he was such a total ****head.

          Was that when he was training him or after?

          Steward said something like he was the best FW ever just before the Barrera fight.

          He didn’t sound completely objective, part of that might have been because Hamed had such a fragile ego.

          After they stopped working together he seemed to get more objective, he even said love on HBO that Hamed ducked Marquez.

            I agree, it’s hard to rank him much higher than the fringes of the top 10 because he didn’t compete that much at the elite, elite level.

            He was a freak talent though imo.

              He had impressive wins over Kelley and McCollough, Sanchez was a good win too. But, after just one schooling by MAB he lost his heart. Sometimes the test of a truly great fighter is how they come back from a defeat. He didn't pass that test IMO. Not sure where I'd rank him all-time given his short career.

                No fan of the guy's whatsoever. But, that doesn't in any manner say I thought he was a talentless creation or anything of the sort. I also enjoy talking some friendly BS now and again on the YouTube with Hamed fans. For real though, Hamed has some extremely loyal fans, and it seems at the slightest appearance or sound that something/someone is about to turn critical as regards him in a youtube video or a written article etc. it's not long before you can almost hear the rumble of the Hamed faithful gearing up and heading wherever it is that his honor is being questioned. I am a big Barrera fan though, and I get annoyed with many others when they say how awful Hamed was et, etc, but then still wanna give credit to Barrera for the defeat of hamed and winning rather handily at that. Personally, it's gotta be one or the other, almost always, at least.

                  - -The irony is his troubles are blamed on his struggles with wt when he could've moved up to 130 vs Floyd in one of the biggest fights of the decade.

                  Floyd usually struggled against smaller, unorthodox fighter and Naseem had the power to hurt and confuse him.

                  Oh well!
