new to the game..a little advice

Hey guys I am 28 years old and new to boxing. I grew up hitting the heavy bag with no formal training. I just started to work out in a good boxing gym with some big names in their. I am 6'1 and about 220 with a pretty muscular build. I have been told by a few of the trainers their that I have natural ability and can throw a real hard punch. I am considering giving this a go but i think about all the kids who are out their at age 3 hitting leather and i discourage myself. I think I could get down to cruiserweight size 195 and know I would be a big cruiser. Am i delusional or what? Also any advise would be great..thanks Dan

Take it up and see what happens.. Biggest thing is to keep training... It gets you to a certain level of conifdence... The next thing is once you've been training so long you start to get the urge to spar... train so more till you can't get ya mind off sparring...You'll get to the next level of conifdence... Take your shots your losses and wins in sparring.. Get to the point where you are sparring good competition...You should always spar the best in the gym before you go out of the gym... Once you start sparring out of the gym you will get to the 3rd level of confidence... start thinking you could have one or 2 AM fights.... win a few of those and you'll start watching the Tournaments more closesly...

And so on from there... Bottom line is its all about confidence... don't discourage yourself by thinking since mayweather started at 3 i'm not good enough... Every develops at different rates ...

You could be the best boxer in the world and not even know it... Potential/Drive could be waiting to break inside you...

You might need to get a AM fight.. Pro fight.. Or just get K.O.'d in the gym to unlock it.. Anyone could have it though...and it hits people at crazy times where they would have never thought.. could be words from your girl or some commercial on T.V... or a fight your watching on ESPN.

But the main thing is to keep the confidence level up...Don't let your mind trick your body into being lazy... You'll never stick with training if you don't do this.. And thas a secret that everyone will overlook reading this. Hopefully you won't.

Mate I feel bad boxing at 17 and thinking of all the younger boxers and it makes me feel bad and i start missing training and then i catch myself on. It keeps happening and i don't know why i keep letting it get to my head. The important thing is not to let it get to you..it's dam hard though

A guy your age needs to be a puncher to have any chance of going anywhere in boxing. Assuming you were born to be a puncher (and that is indeed a generous assumption!) then all you need is rudimentary skills and lots of fitness. At your age developing anything more than rudimentary skills varies between difficult to impossible. Just get in boxing shape and don't worry about weight. Your natural punching power will be the great equalizer. Ron Lyle didn't start until he was 29, but had the misfortune of starting when the division was strong. In the current heavyweight division he would easily be a beltholder.
