    Ring Rust

I am a 35 year old former Canadian Provincial Amateur Boxing Champion (Gold Gloves), I gave up boxing to play Rugby Union in the UK for money. I have since returned to training but in my first attempt at sparring found that my mind said hook and my body didn't respond. Let's say that the young man landed far more then I landed.

Does anyone have any advice on how to shake off this ring rust, or am I just an oldman that should get used it?

That I am doing, and had this been at the bottom of a ruck. I would not have had the issues.

Well, at least I still have good beard. One thing rugby is good for with boxing is building or maintaining a good chin. However, the combos and slipping fades fast.

Try and go more for the smarter approach then the high rate of punches approach. At your age I dont really know your stamina but seeing as you are 35 try and hold for the smarter ring techniques, try and cut the ring and make use out of your youngers opponents overcommitments. Box your self intellengently in and out in and out, whatever you do dont ry and slug it out because with a younger opponent you will fail. Good luck shaking it off.

Thanks, I will be sparring again. If at least to be an active punching bag for the kids. I also think that weight is an issue, I played rugby at 240 lbs. After 3 month of boxing, I'm 227. So, should be able to move better now.
