heavybag, wood chopping (real wood chopping, hammer and tire..or the weight exercise w/ the cable all work) A strong fast core is what does it, the heavy bag works the core very hard as does all the ab training.

Heavy bag is your best bet. Hit it as hard as you possibly can no matter what when you do your rounds on the bag. Your focus when doing it shouldn't be stamina managing, just go relentless on the bag for however long you do your rounds. Every punch should be haymakers even if your tired. Eventually your power will soar.

Nobody has mentioned this, but it's the quickest and easiest way. Make your technique as perfect as possible.
Make sure you're twisting your entire body with each punch from the floor up. Foot -> knee -> hips -> core and shoulder all should be moving before you extend your arm and fist. Alot of people tend to extend the fist and arm out first and then twist the rest of their body around. My coach describes the proper way as your body pushing your fist, not your fist pulling your body.
Building up muscles will surely make you stronger and therefor be able to hit harder, but that takes months and if you're just swinging as hard as you can you will tire yourself out. Focus on technique and punching efficiency.
You'll see alot more improvements in your punching power by spending a couple extra minutes in the mirror each day at the gym examining your technique (get your trainer to watch you as well because it will be easier for him to make corrections) than you will spending hours in the gym lifting weights and hitting tires. When you perfect the techniques, then focus on getting stronger.Last edited by RightHooker; 03-03-2009, 05:31 PM.

I have alot more power from doing 500 push ups, 100 regular sit ups, and 100 bicycle sit ups usually about 4 days a week. I also lift weights twice a week, i work my biceps with 25 pound weights. I do 4 sets of 10 hammer curls, regular curls, and 3 sets of 10 bent over 90 degree curls. Im 5'11, 155 pounds of solid muscle...Just this year, i really started working out alot harder. I went from 150-200 pushups to 500 pushups and i feel alot more power.

Thats not power, thats physical strenght.In this case i think the thread starter is talking about punching power.
Honestly you can do some exercise that help punching power but at the end of the day you have it or you don't. A guy that punches like a girl will never be able to become a 1 punch KO artist.
Like other said, heavybag work, punch it as hard as you can. Shadow boxing with small weights and plyometrics excercise are all great. Your best bet would be to combine them all.
