Hitting your head always runs the risk of brain damage. No matter what way you sustain a blow to the head. Boxing, Car accident, baseball to the face, someone slapping you in the head, fall off the bed, etc.
As for sparring once a week? I'm not sure. I'd say that's up to your coach and you. What are your goals and what is the purpose of your sparring? But that's a question to sit down with you coach and analyze.
But to give an answer, yes. Sparring can give you minor or significant brain damage.

Use lithium. It will lessen the likelihood that you become retar ded or killed in the ring. If you are worried about losing your personality and intellect then just shadow box and hit a stationary bag.

Of course it will. Your head isnt meant to be punched for 9 or 36mins.
What you can do to help your brain is take cbd before and after sparring. I suggest using a roll on CBD around the head and neck areas before and after sparring take a tincture. You can take the tincture first but my fighters say it sometimes makes them feel slower or too relaxed.

One punch placed well can give you brain damage, and without proper recovery time the damage builds.
