glove advice for beginner using heavy bag for fitness purposes only

I've got an unused heavy bag in my house and am looking to start doing a lot hitting for fitness/cardio purposes only. I have no intention to box competitively or outside of my house if that makes a difference.

I'm looking for some equipment advice on gloves and wraps to buy if those are needed. I've been reading a lot and have heard mixed answers to the wrap issue. For fitness purposes, would I want a traditional glove or one that is open ********? Also if I go with wraps...would I want the tape type or the glove type?

Get hand wraps so you do not hurt your hand/wrist. The mexican style are good and cheap(They are the same, just longer).

As for a glove, the heavier the glove the more protection. If you are gonna just pound on a bag, I would get a pair of 12-14 oz gloves. You can check ringside, title, everlast, and compare prices and get what you think would work best for you.

I was in the exact same position as you about 2 years ago. I got 3.5m Lonsdale handwraps and 12oz Lonsdale 'Safe Spar' gloves.

Great protection and value for money and they're still in good condition. That's all you need really.

120" mexican wraps. "Mexican" wraps are slightly stretchy and conform to your hand/wrist better.

Get some 16oz bag gloves. They're heavier so it's a better workout.

would i be ok with the "glove" type of wraps? just seem easier to use and no chance of me screwing up like a traditional wrap

Most glove wraps offer very good support for your knuckles, but not very much for your wrist.

You would want to get some with the traditional style handwrap as well. I use these, and I will never use regular wraps again.

They are only $15, and have lasted me some time now. I've put them through the washer a few times and they still hold up just fine. My brother used them and one of the fingers are starting to rip, so will be time to buy a new pair soon. But I have had them for a good year of training.

Just get any old bag gloves is my advice, the cheaper ones will wear out fairly quickly, usually with me the right hand glove always wears out first compared to the left as Im right handed, but because they are so cheap I just get another pair when the old ones are done.

I'd recommend proper hand wraps though for bag work as opposed to elasticated slip on wraps (although I still use these every so often).

Ive also heard some good things about gel wraps that Domey mentioned, but the ones Ive seen are always expensive as hell

Whether you're using it for fitness or not you need decent handwraps. They're much more important than you think. How much you want to spend on gloves is entirely up to you but considering it's fitness only I would still recommend spending at least 30 because they'll offer good protection and last the year as opposed to cheap ones from the big stores like JJB. These gloves will be uncomfortably and die quickly.

I'd say go for something like the standard boxing glove from Blitz. It's cheap but good, not so great for actual boxing training because the padding is thick and they'll die "quickly" in regular boxing but for fitness purpose, i'd say they're ideal. You can either get the leather version which will cost 30, or the the P.U version, who considering you're only doing it for fitness should be fine, and these are only 17. Their handwraps are of good quality and cheap too.
