Apart from that, stretching is overrated, in my book, but if you must, remember it is dynamic stretches before a workout, and static stretches after... i.e. the warm up is just to getting you moving, and the warm down is where you can work on increasing flexibility and roller-work or whatever
I agree with this. If you are not running daily then all of the sudden try to start, you can bet the calves will be sore and tight...along with the other muscles used. I also agree with the dynamic stretching before and static after

Yeah, if it hurts for just a couple hours, it would likely be just a cramp. But if it's hurting for days (or more), it is a possible strain. For a strained calf, definitely look at the advice others mentioned about incline, foot position, shoes, etc. That repetitive impact can really take a toll if it isn't executed correctly.

Thanks!!
                Are you heavy / obese?

I use a thin roller on my legs everynight while watching TV. I think it's called the stick. Feels great and seems to help immensely with tightness and cramping

I've been using one of these massage sticks, pretty good for knots.
