    pulling hand back when throwing double left hook

    whenever i throw a double left hook my coach tells me to pull my hand back to guard for a millisecond before throwing the second hook.
    I dont understand the point of this because its not likely the opponent will punch exactly during the split second your hand is back defending, i tried doing this in sparring and actually got hit much more often because pulling the hand back slows the combo down & i get tagged while throwing the second hook whereas if i dont pull my hand all the way back im usually gone before the opponent can retaliate

    someone please tell me whats the point of this

    I don't understand the mechanical theory in his view. However, your other glove should NEVER leave guard. Unless ofcourse, you are punching the other guy with it. Then, it's right back to guard. Ofcourse that is, unless you happen to be doubling/tripling up. Then what? Right back to guard...�.Rockin'

      Ask him how many fights did he have...

        I think real fight is different from training, but that's necessary if you want to face a fighter.

          Some guy is trying to punch you in the face. How is this not fighting? I sparred as I fought and fought as I sparred. If you can't deal with the constant pressure....Next!!!..�.Rockin'

            When you throw the double left hook you need to bring your hand back to your face after you throw the first hook. How is that hard to understand?

            You shift your weight to your left side with your hands up, throw the hook, then your weight is on your right side. Then you switch your weight back to your left again and repeat.

            Listen to your coach. If you're slow with it now it's just because you're inexperienced. Once you start to understand how to throw punches better it'll all come together.

              i can envision some cases where you might not bring it back to your head when throwing double left hook. Bringing the glove completely back to the head between the 2 hooks would lengthen the time between the two shots. To get both hooks off quickly, one may not bring the glove completely back to the head but just reposition to get enough space in order to get the second shot off

                I don't get the point, the opponent probably wont punch exactly during the millisecond your hand is back on your chin & i don't see any pro or high level amateur throwing the double left hook like that, pulling it back will ALWAYS slow it down

                    Your coach is a fool. Your correct without knowing why...so I'll try to explain.

                    When you throw a double hook to the same target (head) or a double right hand, your bodyweight goes with the first left hook or right hand.

                    When you double up, you only need to pull your hand back minimally (say 6 to 10 inches) depending on the person before throwing the same punch again.

                    Doing what your coach says actually splits your bodyyweight...and if he's genuinely trying to get you to reload your hook, its unnecessary. If your punching a heavybag, you'll hear the difference on the crack / boom of the impact/s, and two big ****s landed almost instantaneously is better than two in slower sequence.

                    For double and triple left hooks, watch the way Roy Jones throws them - he's not pulling back into stance...once the body weight is thrown forward into the first punch, you only need to touch the second and third left hooks quickly. Same thing with double right hands.

                    Only a fool goes all the way back into stance...sounds like he learned his skills out of a manual. It doesn't really protect you either...the speed of the punches in sequence is what makes you safe throwing those double / triple hooks, not pulling back for a millisecond.

                    Think about the way mexican's throw a proper body/head double hook; they throw the wide hook to the liver / body (which really gets their hips engaged in the punch) and then immediately (almost instantly) throw the quick rythem hook to the head. I have seen less technical Mexicans pull back and reload, but their not taught properly, and sooner or will get bombed with a right hand between those hooks.

                    Hope I've explained this okay, its frustrating trying over the keyboard medium....any half good pro should spot what your doing wrong and correct you in the gym. Best a luck.
