I was doing my Friday thing with my family when several friends called in a row. Called, not texted. I knew it was bad.
And sure enough, it was bad. ICE raids in my neighborhood. (Durham, NC just to clarify).
The people were handcuffed and chained. They were crying. One was hooded by ICE. They were so, so scared.
The ICE agents were masked. They had stalked the streets all morning. Unmarked SUV's, trucks and minivans (always clean, usually tinted windows). Armed to the teeth and looking macho and tuff (barf).
The three men snatched from their homes are our community members. Neighbors. Human. Absolutely nothing scary or sketchy about them.
We do not know at this time if the agents had a signed judicial warrant for any of these men. I'll have more to say when I've had some time to decompress.
I'm very grateful for Siembra NC and for my brave neighbors who witnessed, tried to interrupt, filmed, shouted over and over to see a judicial warrant, contacted Siembra NC's hotline, and bravely spoke their experiences to local media. They showed up to the community with courage.
However, the young men were still taken. Things have been tough for our marginalized neighbors.
We don't no where these young men are, or where they go. I fear they will be sent to Guantanamo, which is gearing up to hold 30,000 souls.
None of this ok, it never was. And it isn't now. Please learn your and your neighbors rights. Know how to step up. Community makes us stronger.
Alert the Siembra NC hotline if you are in NC and think ICE is around. Do not start screaming or scaring neighbors. People are already terrified.
Thank you.
