Surfers is touristy as hell.. (best hot chick to uggo ratio in the world though).. that's why i was recommending coolangatta. nicer beaches and a bit more relaxed.

Definitely more touristy. It's has lots of bars and nightclubs. And it's full of apartments. Many people go to the beach in Surfers.

It totally depends on where you want to settle. your best bet is to make a decision after you have visited all the places you wanted to. If you want an apartment on the beach, well of course it is going to cost you. But there are many many places where prices are more than reasonable.

most areas are close to the beach though, right? ive heard that the majority of the population is within 45 minutes of the beach.

It's a part of the Gold Coast, about thirty kilometers from Surfers (the main drag).

Yeah most of the population is on the east coast. The centre is just a big heap of desert and nothing.

I don't know many comparisons, but in Brisbane I'm in a house paying 450 for four bedrooms in a decent house close to the city.

                      No mate
You can choose to live in the city or the suburbs or the beach or in the country. Rents in my area average around $300 per week which is around ?50. I'm about 10 minutes from the beach. But if I wanted to get a place right on the foreshore then that price would double at least.
