    In The Pocket ??

what is meant when a fighter is in the pocket ( i often hear people say this about pbf) and what are the neccesary skills, tactics ect to perfect it

( not sure if this is in the right forum)

not at the end of a fighters reach... fighting effectively on the inside.

like when a quarterback doesnt drop back into a *******... he stays right inside behind his offensive line... trusting his team to protect him...

floyd fights in the pocket sometimes.. using his defense to protect him, and fighting inside the fighters reach.. ducking slipping and firing counters in between his opponents punches at close quarters

It means fighting on the inside. Hatton does it all the time. It requires no defence and a lot of body shots for ti to work.

Fighting in the pocket will require more defense aswell as quicker defense than fighting on the outside. How could you think that it requires no defense..............Rockin'

To get there it is just walking through punches. Why don't ya see winky in the pocket? Because he has a good defence.

Different fighter have different ways of getting there. Some eat shots, others bob and weave, and some block and parry. The pocket is the area inside an out boxers reach. Either using one of the three methods above to get inside and counter. It takes alot of skill to slip punches, less to block and parry, and none to eat them.

            Hope that helps.

Men who fight tall like to keep you at the optimum range (often called the "kill zone" or "the slot") so that they hit you with full extension punches. Getting in "the pocket" is means that you have gotten past the kill zone which is inside your opponent's optimum range. He can't hit you with full extension punches but he might get in some hooks or uppercuts depending on how good he is fighting on the inside. Men who fight tall aren't usually good at fighting on the inside, however Bernard Hopkins is one notable exception. In my humble opinion he is the best inside fighter in the world. At middle weight most of his opponents were smaller than him and he would neutralize any advantage they might have in the slot by gettin up close and working them. In his last fight he mauled Tarver on the inside.

'pocket = inside of punching range

So a fighter who stays in the pocket is one who keeps on his man and stays in range, rather than popping out after getting his punches off.
