This is real sad for us boxing fans.

I remember going to "Jake's Newstand" every Friday afternoon when they would have the new magazines put up. There was World Boxing, International Boxing, The Big Book of Boxing, The Ring, Boxing Illistrated, Boxing Digest, Boxing Illistrated & a host of quarterly boxing special edition magazines that would cover anything from Muhammad Ali to an upcoming SuperFight. I would buy every boxing magazine that I ever saw. Over the years, my collection, including boxing books, took up several book cases.

I remember often times going to Arby's after picking up the new mags & buying a sandwich & drink & then just sit there & read for an hour or so.
If I had to get to work, or after I did whatever I had to do, I would make sure I finished reading whatever I had missed.

Those days are so long gone. I been having a hard time with my computer freezing up or slowing way down when I try to log in here. The last couple weeks, I been spending lots of extra time with my collection, reading those old articles for the hundredth time or so. They still facinate me though. I remember what was happening in my life by who was fighting who at that time. I remember surgey dates by who beat who when I had the operations.
I can remember what the old house looked like where I would read thru the mags. I remember making up my own Top 10 fighters in every division, every month, for years & years. MY ratings were better then Ring magazines!
I STILL have those notebooks with all my ratings in them!

But all those days are long gone now......

Good stuff that I definitely can relate to Terry.

Those days have been gone already for a while and I mourn them every day but why is this "news" like a nail in everyone's coffin? Isn't is possible that the magazine will be (could be?) in some way improved? Why is everyone crying in their Wheaties?

I'll take a stab at answering this....

Have you ever seen one of those so called "Fight cards" that Oscar promotes?
Main even is a 6 rounder featuring a 6-0 prospect vs a guy who's 2-5? That kind of junk?

The good old days are all but over......

You're gonna have to be more specific w/ me.

What, because Oscar is a bad promoter? That's why The Ring is dead now?

For what it is worth I have always liked and respected Doug Fischer (if he is the new editor).

What I've never been comfortable with is a magazine (especially one so highly regarded) being owned by a boxing promotional company. That just screams conflict of interest. It would be like if the ********** Party owned Fox News.

OK, but that is old news, Ring being owned by a promotional company.

                I don't like that either.

But why is this recent news a death knell?

Great post, Terry. I was a little kid when I first started reading the Magazines in the late 80's early 90's. I was 9 or 10 when I first started reading them so I can relate. In those days I rode my bike to pick up a copy lol.

Internet is a good thing for quick news ...

But the really good stuff, the really good writing, I still find in the magazines: The Ring, Boxing Monthly, Boxing News ... indispensable they are.

Honestly, I made this thread when I first heard about it and it may be a bit over the top. The East coast writers I heard it from were feeling very threatened by it.

The overall reaction is probably because GBP swore that Ring would remain completely seperate from the promotional company. Everything was fine at first, but recently there have been a lot of complaints about the Ring website tilting their coverage to GBP fighters (especially Alvarez). Now they are moving the operation pretty much next door to the promotional company. They also fired a very popular editor, Nigel Collins, and presumably most of the staff. But in a country where you're considered innocent until proven guilty, the magazine deserves a chance before it is condemmed. I've just always been skeptical of the very high regard the mag gets (especially by the east coast media), maybe because its been sold several times in my life and has been involved in scandals.
