The WBC was formed in the 60s because it was felt that the foreign countries weren't recognized enough.

There was some alphabet soup in earlier days, just not to the extent of today.

The NBA (which became the WBA), the NYSAC was pretty regarded, there was the IBU, and some other stuff.

It's not as new as people think, it's just the fact that the alphabets have gotten so ridiculous in the last couple decades.

I'm sure someone else can give a history of this in better detail.

Harry Mullan's 'Encyclopedia of Boxing' has a short chapter devoted to the history of the modern alphabet groups (and earlier ones), boxing commisions, and other things of that nature that have to do with the "administration of boxing" (the chapter title).

I think the WBA is the oldest boxing organization, it was NBA (national boxing association) the WBC was formed in 1963 although some suggest it was one of those abc groups back in the 40s?? the IBF started in the mid 80s.

The IBF and WBO are the belts with less meaning. WBA and WBC are losing prestige too, nowadays there is like 3 champs from one org, its ****ed up.

In it's mulitple roles as venue, promoter, as well as being a boxing governing body, the National Sporting Club (established in 1891) could be classified as the oldest boxing organization...or at least the oldest starting with the MoQ era.

Another early organization that hasn't been mentioned yet was the American Boxing Association, which came into existence (and left soon after) around the time the IBU was being formed in the early/mid 1910's.

                - -In the beginning it was the peoples who decided the champ.

Then officious publications horned that the peoples bought and so on.

Boxing fell apart starting with Leon Spinks being stripped of his heavyweight championship after beating Ali. That title was handed to Norton. It’s been downhill since that time. The commissions which number 5 or 6 today decided to start running themselves as businesses maximizing revenue by maximizing the number of championship bouts. Today you have the potential of 5 world champions and 50 top ten contenders. A joke which has permanently ruined the sport.
