Well we will never know how good he would have been. He did have hellacious power, but from what I've seen he had many weaknesses yet and a susceptible chin. Mario Maldanado put him down and he wasn't that big of a puncher. Ayala wouldn't be able to wade in against G-Man like that or it would be a very short night.
McClellan could take a punch and I think Ayala's nature would lead him into a toe-to-toe war he would lose. McClellan KO rd 6.
Having said that Ayala was ferocious and hella aggressive, but he also had some serious character flaws you could see in the ring. Regardless its kind of unfair to compare the too since Ayala's prime was eaten up in prison.
As for the older Ayala, I see the same outcome only a little sooner.

Hard to rate Ayala on what "could have, should have" been. His career and therefore, his credentials to be considered for fantasy match ups, is very limited. He never faced a killer puncher. He had that bully mentality in the ring, but he never fought any elite fighter who really tested his chin or his heart. I really was super high on Ayala when he was fighting. Even after he got out of prison and resumed his career, I still liked him a lot. But I will always question his real desire to reach the top because he was handed so much in boxing and very purposely, chose to throw away his prime boxing years. Right there, I question his heart and devotion to the sport.
No such questions to be asked of the G-Man.....Killer puncher and probably too much heart. A heart that over-ruled his body and kept fighting on as his brain was shutting down. He was and always will be a proven World Champion who's name is forever in the record book under "Champions"
My pick is Ayala is knocked down a couple times and his dad throws the towel in to avoid more of the beating that McClelland was laying on him. It's a Hager-Hearns type slugfest until Gerald's bombs start landing flush. I envision a middlewight Foreman-Frazier type KO in 2.
