Hansen-Green; best ever boxingmoment in Denmark.

Finally on youtube. My personal and most danes old enough to remember's best and most enjoyable fight in danish boxing history. That's partly thanks to the great commentary by Reg Gutteridge and of course it's a testament of Hansens character.

Hansen always had a booming right hand that was said to be struck out of fear. He was also known to bail out whenever the going got tough.

There's a bit of everything here:

Hansen was without doubt the most popular fighter in danish history mainly due to him being like the (old) guy next door with a great sense of humour and an even greater right hand.

With this win Hansen made a danish equivalent of Muhammad Ali by winning the european title for the third time. It also catapulted him to the top of the world welterweight rankings.

Although a somewhat unrelated question: is there any popular movement to ban professional boxing in Denmark like in other areas of Scandinavia (namely Sweden)?

Great post. Green really seemed like a top class fighter for a while, despite the loss to Palomino in which he was leading on points, but this loss derailed his career despite the subsequent fight with Ray Leonard. Green didn't have the best chin but he was a solid workman-like fighter. Hansen had a lengthy career which included fights with Arcari and Cuevas but I'd say that this was the highlight of his career.

Not really. The ban-boxing brigade gathered some followers last year when Johnny Jensen was found out to have fought despite a braininjury. That story in itself is rather sad and somewhat disgusting, but as far as ban-boxing, the cries died down fairly quickly.

Also Sweden is known as "Prohibition Sweden" in Denmark as Sweden is seen as a place where everything is illegal. Just a little bonus info.

Indeed it was the highlight. He did also have 2 notable and memorable fights with fellow dane Hans Henrik Palm.

Part of the story of Hansen being so popular is also the fact that he lost his second EBU title in a defense against Josef Pachler in Austria. Hansen patted Pachler on the shoulder after a round had ended and Pachler looked bemused at Hansen and then in the most theatrical of fashions threw himself to the floor. The austrians rushed in with a stretcher, oxygen and paramedics. At the same time it was announced that Hansen had been DQ'ed and that was the medicine Pachler needed as he jumped up from the stretcher and received the belt to the crowds applause.

Dave`boy`Green the Fen Tiger - his greatest ever fight was a 10rd thriller with Andy Price (usa) in 1977 which was as good as any fight ever fought in Britain during the 70s
