PRIME FOR PRIME. I know Joe Louis had a better resume than Mike Tyson but I don't believe he could have beaten the Tyson of 86-89 PRIME TYSON.

I think you're putting far too much emphasis on h2h when talking about greatest HWs. And I can't see Marciano beating Sonny Liston TBH.

To be honest there are three ways to provide a personal top 10:

1) Based on legend/resume

2) Based on who you think would win match ups prime for prime

3) Based on who you enjoy watching ( your favorites )



My own list based on legend/resume would look something like:

1) Muhammed Ali
2) Joe Louis
3) Larry Holmes
4) Jack Johnson
5) George Foreman
6) Evander Holyfield
7) Mike Tyson
8) Lennox Lewis
9) Rocky Marciano
10) Jack Dempsey

The last four could be jumbled round all day, Dempsey and Marciano have a good argument for being higher but their title reigns could have been better. Other than that Frazier would come in at number 11, Liston at number 12. I'd like to stick Tunney in but his career at heavy was too short.



Now as for prime for prime matchups my list differs greatly:

1) Muhammed Ali
2) Larry Holmes
3) Mike Tyson
4) George Foreman
5) Rid**** Bowe
6) Evander Holyfield
7) Sonny Liston
8) Lennox Lewis
9) Joe Louis
10) Vitali Klitschko

So many of these prime for prime are closely matched, in fact between number 3 and number 7, I would have no confidence in picking a winner......Mike Tyson is a very controversial third, I admit that. Foreman and Liston would be very nasty stylistic matches for him.

Sadly I also felt very sheepish putting Louis ahead of Klitschko. If they were to meet in a ring I fear Vitali would be a much tougher foe than Schmelling, Farr or Gallento who near prime Louis had problems with.



Now as for personal faves again my list is totally different:

5) Gene Tunney

The quest to achieve a perfect top ten is too tough as there are so many factors to consider. I like keeping to three lists like above.
