I found that amazing and entertaining. I googled him and that cannon ball weighed 104 pounds, and he would take the cannon ball to the stomach sometimes twice a day while he was in the circus.

Probably after a long process working up from small ones to figure out just how much he could take safely. It's more that it looks good to spectators than anything.
