    I'm sad....

For Ike Quartey. So much heart, so much skill, so much will.....

I've rarely seen anyone screwed so bad in their career. I think he could have been a great. A genuine great. He couldn't handle being screwed by losses that he thought he clearly won twice in a row. He actually thought that the rules and what's right and real would prevail in this world.

I thought he won every fight he ever had, apart from against Wright when he was just old, tired and done. Sadly, his two losses early on made him very bitter and angry, thus his premature retirement from the sport he loved so much for five years. He just couldn't handle coming to another country, after training for months (apart from the lifetime spent and dedicated to honing his skills) just to have fight given to the other fighter by people who only care about money and greed because they are more popular and well known and he is just some African dude.

Then later he comes back, wins more fights, then gets absolutely robbed blind against Forrest.....Can you imagine the feeling?

People just say "Oh well, it's just boxing" without realising that someone has dedicated their life so completely to this sport and put more hours into it than any doctor or lawyer or whatever. I find it so sad.

I was just watching him against Jose Juis Lopez. How the **** did Lopez pull a draw out of that? He lost nearly every single round apart from the two he scored a KD in. This was just before he fought Oscar, which I also thought he won and that was just before Vargas which I also thought he won (thought that was a real pick 'em from memory).

It's difficult to imagine the anger, never ending frustration, and bitterness that results from having a fight you won taken away by people who have nothing to do with the fighting but are only there to make a buck. It's why Jeff Fenech just lost all heart literally the moment he heard the announcement that he hadn't won the fight against Azumah Nelson. The first undefeated 4 division champion in boxing history.....taken, not because of the fighter across the ring from you, but by a corrupt, greedy, money hungry criminal promoter....Can you imagine how that would make you feel?

    Christ I despise boxing sometimes.

The Jose Luis Lopez scoring was criminal. But Quartey's inactivity ruined his career. The only reason Oscar Delahoya fought Quartey was because of the 18 month layoff and the fact he looked vulnerable in his previous fight. A lot of people also forget that even that fight was delayed because of an alleged "cut" Oscar suffered in training. When this was announced there was no cut to be seen on Oscar. Even with the two knockdowns I didn't think Oscar deserved that decision and the scoring indicated Quartey was going to get screwed regardless against. He had to knock Oscar out to win.

Quartey may have had a layoff but no question he was in better condition when he fought Oscar. I had Oscar winning 7 rounds, Quartey winning 4 with the 11th round even and Oscar winning the 12th 10-8, and I gave the 6th round in which they were both down to Quartey because he did more so I gave him that round 10-9. 2nd round was close and I wouldn't argue against somebody giving that round to Quartey but it was still not enough to win the fight.

Not to mention that the fight could have been stopped in the 12th.

I didn't see the fight as close as Merchant and Lederman did.

I sure would like to know the 7 rounds you gave Oscar in that fight.

I don't remember exactly but I think I scored it for Quartey by 2 points. I'm going to watch it again to refresh my memory. From what I do remember, no way did Delahoya sweep the first 4 rounds. Regardless of Foreman and Lampleys cheerleading Delahoya. Outside of the knockdowns Oscar was very inactive and ineffective in that fight and lost too many rounds to get a decision IMO.

Well I disagree. Lampley, Merchant and Lederman were all riding the Quartey bus, so as you say they were cheerleading, they were not. Oscar was far more effective with the jab for the first 4 rounds. The second round was very close with not much activity and like I said I wouldn't argue with you if you gave it to Quartey, but I feel that Oscar landed the crisper more effective jabs.

It is very easy to see DLH winning the first 4 rounds, with the second being very close with not much action. DLH controlled those rounds easily with jab as far as I'm concerned, and the fight didn't really heat up until the middle rounds.

Oscar hinted at the end that he didn't want to fight Quartey again because it was a lackluster show for the most part. I believe that Oscar could have continued to outjab Quartey for all 12 rounds as he did for the first 4, but Oscar was always an entertainer. He said at that end of the fight that he'd like to fight a more action packed fight, and it isn't like he went and fought lesser opponents, he went on and fought all the top fighters.

Quartey fought a very cautious fight and if Oscar wasn't aggressive, he could have just continued to outbox/outjab him in the middle of the ring all night, as it was clear after the first 4 rounds that Quartey had no answer for it.

No way did Quartey beat Vargas. I thought while it was competitve Vargas won & won pretty clear.

I thought Pernell Whitaker was more unlucky than Quartey.

Quartey was definitely robbed against Forrest. It wasn't even close.

I've said this in my Wright-Whitaker thread, the only fighter to ever beat quartey decisesively was Winky Wright.
