    Hurricane Carter

Some say yes some say no. Giardello sued the makers of the movie and won an apology and maybe a few bucks. Some also say Rubin killed those people. They say he was not exonerated of the crime, that bad police work was the reason for his release. I don't know.

I read once that Bob Dylan emerged from a private interview with Carter, white as a ghost (which he is anyway), trembling in his boots as if fearing for his life and refused to ever speak of the matter again.

I do not think Carter beat Giardello, but he did beat his new blond wife (part of the voluntary legal brigade from Canada, I believe) and her son in a motel room shortly after his release from prison. This was around the time of the Dylan interview.

He hit very hard, maybe in the Julian Jackson category. I wonder how he would have done against Tony the tiger Ayala? I wonder how he would have done against Golovkin and Hagler, guys who came to fight instead of box?

I was wondering the same thing about whether he did it or not, which is a shame after reading his book (16th round) and seeing the movie but obviously there's bias there. In reply to the questions...he wasn't in haglers league

Hagler & Golovkin would have hammered Carter.. You are correct saying, "Carter hit very hard" he was a tremendous puncher, but nothing more than that..

Carter is much more famous for being a prisoner rather than a boxer. He was a better version of Curtis Stevens in his time. The KO of Griffith is the only thing that distinguishes his career.

............... "The KO of Griffith is the only thing that distinguishes his career".

Very true, when he stepped up he got beat. He wasn't that great of a puncher either that came more from his look & demeanor than actual power. He had a less than 50% ko rate and the majority of stoppage was from much lesser talents.
He did have a good chin and was willing but not the fighter his acclaimed
          reputation offered.
Good fighter against alot of good fighters, as far as Hagler goes I'll take Hagler all day. As for GGG not sure I'm still waiting to see GGG under some kind of stress and I think Carter offers that compared to GGG oppposition so far.

I would take Hagler all day too. How do you think Carter would do against one of Marvin's hard hitting opponents like Mugabi or Roldan? Did he have enough chin to make it through a Hearns onslaught? If so, he would easily have enough power to KO Tommy, I would think. Could he take the early heat so he could land his big one.

I am no Carter fan, but it seems to me he was hitting pretty danged hard despite any KO ratio numbers. Maybe he was not too adept at landing that big bomb accurately. The only thing he knew how to do was follow Joey around the ring. His traps (t****zoids) were more developed than any fighter in memory.

Yeah, heard about the successful Giardello lawsuit too and also read that Carter was exonerated in real life due to lost evidence and witness statements over time. The movie was really inaccurate. In fact, Cracked.com included the movie in their series of articles titles "Movies Based on a True Story (That are full of s***)" or "That are complete BS". In fact, they ranked the movie #1 out of the 7 they mentioned here:

Ever consider Carter would not be mentioned much if it weren't for Bob Dylan. He might have been forgotten.

Decent contender, truly horrible man. Even though the prosecution case was poorly constructed and blatantly racist he was still very likely guilty of the crime to which he was sentenced.

I do not know whether Carter did those crimes or not, I just read that there are a few or maybe quite a few people who think he did it.
As for the Giardello fight though - Carter won it. I saw it and he dominated a lot of rounds, it was not a highway robbery if I remember correctly, but Carter should definitely have gotten the decision.
