I agree his reputation has been overblown... I often see him and other murderers row types all rated in lists at the expense of the likes of Les Darcy, one of the reasons I now refuse to recognise any lists by anybody from anywhere anytime, they are all faulty, cannot be proved and are a waste of time. Burley sure was a talented guy, no doubt about it but ATG ? I don't think so, very very few guys who never won a title do I rate very high, Packey McFarland is one, Billy Graham the other... Darcy not one of them, he did have a world title just that some arrogant and highly biased people deny this as legit is boxings problem not mine.

Says you mate, I am not saying he wasn't a fabulous scientific, boxer he clearly was but no title and no shot against Zale or if I remember rightly never fought La Motta the two best MW's of Burley's time at MW. The problem with Burley and one thing I think you may have overlooked entirely is this... why wasn't Burley rated so highly then as he is now ???
Revisionism, from writer who had an axe to grind..... I think head to head les Darcy beat him, Zale and LaMotta and all other MW's from the 40's, I have very little doubt about it, he most probably knocks them out, especially if they try hitting Darcy with bombs, that wouldn't stop Darcy, he would just get serious and hit back harder and then harder even still. I use him as my example because he is usually the victim of these guys when it comes to all time MW lists and because he is the real deal, the complete boxer/fighter/puncher/infighter and outfighter.

Basically what I am saying is the in actual fact he is not "undisputed" top 20 or anything else except that he was a beautiful boxing stylist, very good defensive fighter, maybe as good a chin as Darcy, he never got knocked out and he carried a good heavy punch, yes a pretty formidable guy, but name any single middleweight with say the top 80 or 90 best MW's of all time that isn't formidable ? His record is very good, 86-12-2 is nothing to sneeze at but there are many with similar records. What also bothers me is that there are aome very good names on his resume but equally as many if not more from this time period who are not there, I mentioned two before but there are more. I will look into it further but most of it has been covered in this thread like beating a young and far from prime Archie Moore who was a late bloomer, Fritzie Zivic is one of the few white names he had on his record but I think Fritzie was well past his best and only a WW in reality.

Did Burley and Charles begin their pro careers in the same year? Seems like I remember that, but I did not know the Ez was still in highschool. Didn't know he even went to highschool.

I can tell you one thing for sure, Ezzard Charles should have been a schoolteacher because to took most boxing opponents into a school where they were shown up as such poor students that they had to "repeat" a year ........ or two or three even, some just upped and left school altogether.

By the way, I LOVE that reel of film of Mayweather getting blasted you put up there and it tells me everything I know is wrong with boxing today, especially in Mayweather fights... WHY THE %$###(*^$# is this bloody referee stepping in between the fighters and protecting Floyd from getting hit as he would have gotten repeatedly in any other era, this proves the refs are simply paid or coerced into protecting this rich FOOL at all times, it is obvious from that one small loop of film you have that the boxing game today is irredeemable, the ref saves Floyd from a KO here....... his legacy will be "the guy who f*****d boxing and made it a circus"
