    Patterson v Ellis

the decision still bugs me 47 years after the fact. I would loved Floyd to have faced Frazier in 69 as painful as that might have been. Thoughts?

Most people believe floyd deserved the nod over Ellis but I think joe would have been to strong for patterson

Terrible decision. Years later I rescored it and had it 9-6 Patterson while giving Ellis every benefit of the doubt. Arum said in recent years that the referee (the only scorer) gave the fight to Ellis because that is what he thought Arum wanted.

If Floyd had been the decision, I suspect there would have been a rematch. There would have been some reluctance to feeding him to Frazier.

patterson had his skills. Really good speed, put punches together really well and moved very well in the ring. I could see a prime for prime bout with these two that might suprise people.

I think Frazier wins it and if we look at what he did to Foster it might well indicate a similar treatment for Floyd given floyd's size...And Foster was a much stronger puncher than Floyd. With that said, Floyd was very precise with his punches and might have made it tough for Joe coming in, but Joe was relentless...and Floyd would most probably be broken down by Frazier, albeit in slower fashion than Liston.

I haven't seen a lot of Floyd Patterson. Gonna have to check out some of his fights on YouTube.

Is his style very similar to Mike Tyson since he was also trained by D'Amato?

I have never seen the fight, so I won't comment on the decision, but I do know that frazier would have been way too much for floyd in the late 60s

It was a terrible decision.. Floyd Patterson is one of the most underrated fighters in all boxing history. It is "Rubbish" written that he could not take a punch. Muhammad Ali said, "Patterson was the best boxer he ever fought in his career"

I agree with you. Guy had beautiful technique, looked a bit like Telepeo Stevenson to me.... great balance, quickness and great punch selection...

Also: beating Archer Moore at heavy weight may not be a great accomplishent per se but Floyd outslicked him! The only other guy to do that Allegedly was Burley. It wouldn't suprise me if floyd could give Joe fits coming in because floyd could do something we just don't see these days: he could punch while moving backwards. Still think Joe would win but it wouldn't suprise me...

Eddie Futch & Yank Durham kept Frazier out of the tournement because they feared Patterson may out point Joe ~ "speed beats power"~

Well you see some of the peek a boo but Floyd was more fluid than explosive when compared to Mike. While Mike uses a lot of short statico movements from the waist up, Floyd repositions himself *******ly and sets up so that he is in range with his combos...Floyd was also, imo, a trap setter! Tyson was more of an adaptive reactive fighter who, like Dempsey was looking for a way to hit something on you and then come straight up the middle.
