Mills Lane was the ref who had 111-113.
Cooney gave Larry a pretty good fight, Cooney was a dangerous opponent because of that left hook, he had some power.

I remember him in the inner city gloves (NYC) as a young kid fighting at middleweight (165).

--- official scores were 111-113 x 2 and 109-115 for Holmes at the point of VValle entering the ring to stop the fight.

Adding in the 3 deducted points makes those scores 114-113 x 2 and 112-115 with Cooney at a split decision, so officially Lar in obvious danger of losing the fight.

I'll post my rd x rd tomorrow on a better 'puter than my 4.0 iPhone.

I did the same thing yesterday. That's why I only posted a score for the first round. Didn't want to rewatch the whole fight again. I should have kept notes, but didn't.

That was some fkkked up scoring .

Funnies thing written about Victor Valle was someone calling him a " trainer who couldn't train a goat to eat grass." Amazingly, he trained Costello too.

--- Obviously Valle wasn't a high end trainer, but he was NYC centric like Cooney and Algieri as another example.

They did well securing a huge purse and scare into Holmes. At the end of the day, Cooney was not prepared for a 15 rd fight much like the inactive, much older Liston against Ali.

I'd have gone up against Godzilla for what Cooney got paid!

Liston was 34 and last fought 7 months from the bout with Ali.
Not very old especially considering wear & tear.
From 1961 thru 1963 he fought 3 rds. Just because he scored 3 first round KO's that's what punchers do! If he had 3 tough distance fight with capable opponents that would hold up better than soft fights.

Cooney made his money because he was white! Is that a news here?
