Williams versus Liston, how to deal with speed

Williams had more Ko's than Louis and Marciano. He was a pure puncher with speed...a really tough combo to face.

Liston who had the reach, demonstrated in this fight, how a boxer puncher deals with speed and power. first watch Liston and how he keeps his hand tight next to his head, no hook is going to knock his block off! and watch how Sonny times the punches so he can slip them, even as he moves backwards away from Williams as Williams comes on strong.

It has been pointed out that Sonny fights backwards and forwards, and if you watch, when he attacks, he becomes quite mobile, so his man can never get away. Finally watch how he nullifies the speed of williams with his reach: he uses the jab to just touch Williams enough to throw his punch off. Just enough to double up, or catch williams head coming in on the punch.

Liston does all this so he can work inside. At this range? Well Liston knows Williams has to loop the hook, and this allows him to get there first.

So people ask? how would Liston who some idiots call slow lol, deal with a fast puncher like Tyson? well here is precident. Tyson could not fight going backwards...neither could Williams, but Sonny could. Sonny also punched in bunches, If he didn't he used his jab...Imagine throwing a punch and someone taking a heavy stick and slamming it, point end into your shoulder as you brought the punch around to bare...you have an idea how Liston nullified speed.

I feel that when we make these comparisons we can often use case studies and I believe this fight is a great one. Again Williams had more KO's than Louis and Marciano! he was a murderous puncher.

Liston twice destroyed a prime Williams. Ali got to him when he was past prime and recently recovered from a gunshot wound that almost killed him. Left him with permanent kidney damage and and partial loss of his intestines. He would be a champion in any era.

Nowadays, people would just say: look at Williams' physique. He's doing PEDS.

I believe that was long before they were available.

And the size queens would all ask "how much did he weigh?" and then say "Humph he is a cruiser." Williams reminds me of my second rescue Dog "Beans." He is pure muscle, not an once of fat... He is the same weight as my German Shephard mix, but as I explain to my wife when feeding them, Beans is a much bigger dog! By the way he came with that name! I would never name a dog Beans!!!!

Williams and Liston were both big tall men, bigger than Wilder. And the reason they weigh what they do is because they have no extra weight.

Williams was 6'3', and Liston about 6'1", but they were solid muscle with brute strength. Trained the boxers were meant to be trained, in such a way that developed their tendons and ligaments--which is where punching power is derived. They also had great stamina, which is something severely lacking in today's HWs. Williams and Norton had that perfectly sculpted physique, but Williams was actually the better of the two boxers. He just had the misfortune of having his prime cut down by a bullet.

A lot of fans don't realize that even a middleweight in top physical fighting condition can punch down a house, now imagine how devastating a top conditioned HW can hit, especially if trained properly.

Williams record was built upon fighting opponents in his neck of the woods which were notoriously of low quality. When he stepped up in class Williams fared poorly. Certainly a huge puncher but very little else.

Liston was a poor mans Joe Louis. The power, kinda sorta similar styles but lacking all the real skills of the sport. Liston I always found while watching him was a very easy to predict hwt. Jab, right hand, left hook. Repeat.

I miss Ray... Some of the things said on these threads, Im not going to be the only one calling people out... Liston a poor man's Joe Louis....Yup ok. Two totally different styles, two totally different ways of delivering power, and thats just to start. I am hearing some of the ******est crap today.

Liston's feet are a lot faster than Louis's.
