    Dempsey "ducked" Willie Mehan!

You got to give Willie Mehan his due; he was first out of the box calling for his shot.

Wasn't going to happen. By December '19 there was already talk of a Carpentier fight.

All from the New York Times

What's your definition of a duck?

Meehan had beaten Dempsey in the past, but he had more losses than wins in 1919.

      - -March 1919 was Willies last Gasp at any contender status.

Had a fine record and beat ancient Langford and Jeff Clark in his specialty Butterbean hometown 4 rounders.

Punch drunk thereafter, but Willie very popular in Cali that made good copy on the east coast as an exotic legend.

I was being cheeky with the word. Just wanted to give Meehan a little attention; beside the word 'duck' gets beaten to death on this forum. So why shouldn't Willie get a little thrown his way.

        Oh! Sorry about the spelling.

            - -Apparently Jack also ducked the other JJOHNSON when that fight offered in Mexico City.

Well known Jeannette, Sam, Harry and McVea were also ducking title challenges from JJOHNSON...only on BH!

I have somewhere the $1,000,000 offer made for a Mexico City fight as well but can't put my hand on it just now.

                - -Now, is this Dempsey U talkin' of, or Kearns and Rickard calling the shots?

Neither greedy batard would turn down that amount of $.

Until he is pushed out by the new 'old lady' in '25, it is always Kearns talking. At this point in '22 I doubt Rickard has any leverage with Dempsey.

The million dollar Mexico City offer is one thing (which I can't find proof of right now) but the $200,000 offer (above) is beneath the $300,000 guarantee Kearns wanted.

Kerans had opted for the guarantee against Carpentier ($300,000 with no gate) only to watch Richard walk away with the lion share of the 1.7 million garnered. He was determined to correct that mistake.

This time around he was determined to get Dempsey a 300K guarantee and a percentage of the gate.
