    Mexico Amateur Boxing Question

Word is, the guy I'm fighting in our charity smoker tomorrow has had a few amateur fights in Mexico. I know nothing about this; would those fights have been USA Boxing rules? Or are they tougher -- smaller gloves, longer rounds, whatever -- than what we're used to up here?

He's 5'5" 155 & I'm 5'9" 165 -- technically we're both middleweights (I've had to run my ass off these past two weeks to get here, though) but I've seen the guy and I feel like Godzilla compared to him. We're both fireplugs and brawlers. I haven't sparred him but the guy I talked to said he's a hitter. Should be a good bout. I gotta keep that jab out there, though.

    Anybody fought in Mexico?

Sounds like regular AIBA rules. How is that way different from the USA boxing rules?

If this guy knows his business you are about to find out from personal experience just how overrated size can be. If you are capable of fulfilling the role of George Foreman to his being Joe Frazier, then the fight might be easy for you. The other alternative is to stick-and-move, but if you haven't been training for that it might prove to be a tough night. If he is a puncher, the last thing you want to do is get into a slugging match. Be sure your medical insurance is paid up to date!

If he wants to make it a slugfest I'm fine with that. I've already made a preemptive appointment with my doctor for Monday morning.

Hey, I'm old but I ain't dumb. This is the same doctor who, examining me after my last fight, told me, "I'd like to see more guys your age take up boxing."

                "Really?" I said.

"Oh, yeah," he said. "I have boat payments."
