    Height Weight question

I'm about 6'1 or 6'2 and 175lbs (with no clothes on). Is this an ideal weight for my height? I have very little body fat. I just started boxing again the past 2 weeks (did a little when I was 10 years old), what weight class would I fight in? Light Heavyweight?

    thanks

    165-178 is Light Heavyweight.

    There is no ideal weight.

I'm 5'9" 165. I had more explosive power at 175 but I move better and have more endurance at 164. At Light Heavy, my opponents are taller than me; at Middleweight, my opponents are more my height -- or if they're tall, they're lanky and have a lot of midsection to pummel. Also, Middleweights, IMO, don't seem to hit as hard as LH's. This is based off of one fight and a few months of sparring at Middle, and 2 fights and a lot of sparring at LH, mind you; I have no doubt there are Middleweights who can ring my bell.

DA1CATAS put it very well when he said, Light Heavyweight is where you start getting into the realm where a single punch is able to change the entire tide of the battle. This is a blessing and a curse, IMO, but it's right on the money in my experience.

Train hard and see where you're comfortable.

Hey thanks for all of that info, that's good stuff to know. Wow 178 is the cut off, I really will have to watch what I eat.

Your ideal weight has more to do with your bodytype than it does your height. There are heavyweights who are 6'2", there are also welterweights that are 6'2".

I would enourage you to train hard and eat very healthy. Try to limit your calorie intake to be pretty low, but not so low that you find yourself feeling drained.. Do all that, and see what the weight comes out at, and that is your good fighting weight.

thank you for the response. Yea I've always been skinny. I'm lanky too. I always feel "my best" at 177lbs. Which is good, because that still keeps me in light heavyweight. I'm assuming you are weighed in, in just your underwear? This is important, as i've noticed my clothes and shoes add around 5lbs

Yes, you would be weighed in your underwear.

I agree with what Fraidycat says!

It's true that once you start hitting light heavy and upwards the increase in power is quite alarming. You can be coasting along, tagging your opponent at will then "wham" a purple haze covers your eyes and your covering up waiting for the bell to save your ass.

From sparring with my fellow super heavies as soon as one of us gets caught clean with a right hand it usually stops the round dead!

When you start sparring you'll soon find out where your at and what weight's best for you.

              Good luck

Don't worry about your weight, worry about your fitness. Once you achieve boxing shape that will be your optimum fighting weight. It takes many months of hard training to get there, but once you are there you will know it. You will be stronger, fitter and healthier than you have ever been and you will be able to feel the energy and vitality pulsating within you. When men reach that level they start to believe they can do anything. Just look at Ricky Hatton, he is in great shape and now he thinks that he can beat Floyd Mayweather. That is the problem with getting in shape, you start becoming delusional!

if u're a guy with small bones / small frame like me it's better to be at 165 and lower. u either get short guys like me or guys built like kelly pavlik at middleweight.

I'm 5'9" 165. I have a much leaner look and more agility at middleweight; around 175-180 I look like Mighty Mouse.

                    Me at 165:

That extra 10 lbs. makes a huge difference in endurance, too. Much more than I thought it would. I blazed through my last fight.
