The only concrete recommendation I've heard of that I really agree with is 200+ rounds of contact sparring before first fight. Different people are different, but I think that recommendation does a lot to ensure success- or at the very least a competitive fight.
My first fight was after 6 months or so from joining a full time gym; though I'd trained in the techniques long before that. I don't think I got enough contact sparring with guys my size before that fight. I also think i was too worried about weight loss. I didn't do well.
At the time, my coach had stopped showing up a few months before hand. He reappeared 2 weeks before hand and asked me if i really wanted to do it. I should've listened to his advice, but I was stubborn & did it anyway.
So I guess my full recommendation is "first fight when your coach says your ready".Last edited by Pork Chop; 03-04-2009, 01:43 PM.

5.5 months. I was ready before that and had two fights fall through at the last minute.
Fight only lasted a minute and I won. I was very fortunate with the situation regarding sparring and training that I got into at my gym so my confidence was sky high going into the fight and I had nothing to worry about.
