    Swaying Head Movement

    So generally head movement that starts with the legs is the most common style of head movement. Sometimes fighters also sway side to side relying on the waist muscles and upper body.

    This trainer says its best used when doing a pendulum step.

    It was used at times by Tyson, although Tyson also used head movement beginning with the legs. Usyk also uses this type of upper body movement.

    Generally though I think it's fair to say that it's a more rare style of head movement than head movement that starts with the legs.

    Some people say that this type of head movement doesn't exist, even if you show them a clip of a guy moving solely with the upper body.

    Here is a link to a post from Joey Hadley who was trained by Cus D'Amato where he talks about this slipping style;

    "Slipping is done from the torso without moving the legs in the motion"

    Who are some other examples of fighters who use this type of upper body movement?

    The D'Amato style slips straight punches and uppercuts with head movement using the waist. And defends against hooks with bobbing and weaving head movement that uses the legs.

    It will also on occasion duck under straight punches with a bob using the legs.

    That's the general framework. In the heat of battle advanced D'Amato fighters mixed and matched their head movement to react to situations, guided by their trained instincts and experience.

    An example of a fighter that swayed sideways and backwards with his head to avoid punches is Muhammad Ali.

      Yes Ali is a good example.

      Can you think of any modern fighters who use this head movement style? I can only think of Usyk but I'm sure there are more out there.

        In my opinion head movement should be sharp and precise.

        Swaying you must stop your flow to go the other way.

        Sharp and precise.................Rockin'
