So today at my gym we had sparring day and I was sparring one of the head instructors after several rounds already. He has several fights under his belt and I have none. All of a sudden he starts coming at me 100% eventually drops me with a liver shot. After he says just be careful how hard you hit. I ask him who complained so I can apologize and all he said was “some people were complaining about you.” Honestly I felt bad. I’m trying to be more aggressive when I fight as in pushing forward and countering. I was even told last sparring session by another instructor that “i don’t hit hard enough” because were taught to go 30-40 percent and he said I probably go 10-15. Every time I have hit someone hard on accident I apologize right after, every time and that it is not an exaggeration. I have about 3 years experience very on and off and have sparred maybe 12 times in my life in total. Just wondering what you guys think.

What I found was if the other guy can bust you a good one he will. So I decided to go in and bust him one first. Getting hit is 180' to hitting a guy, gotta get used to it (in both ways) if you want sanctioned bouts. The head guys in this gym are kidding themselves if they believe that they can build a strong team of boxers, who hurt nobody and is hurt by nobody, in sparring. Sparring is where you learn to box/fight If they do believe that they can raise a strong team like that than please pass them this note for me: Land for sale in California, dirt cheap. Call me.
Why push the fight to only counter? Get off first, get off often and then repeat as needed.

You should have smashed the cvnt. What message is his gym sending if the fighters need to send in the instructor to do their dirty work. He's a bully and you should deal with him accordingly. After those other soft dogs see you do him up...they will keep their mouths shut.JabRight

Ive always found that when they say "lets go light" or lets work... that isnt always true so be ready. My first punches are always jabs.. with some head movement to miss their punches I can always tell if they are throwing with bad intentions. The other guys in this post are right.. hard sparring builds character in their trainees. You gotta spar hard to realize boxing aint no game.Train hard in the gym so that you dont get punished as much in a real fight.Rockin' likes this.

Doesn't seem like the right guy to be training people tbh.
I trained at 3 places. At one, I remember a kid was working the pads with the trainer and tried to punch him in the face. The trainer caught the punch, laughed at the kid and told him not to be an idiot, then carried on training. Another place I sparred with a guy smaller than me who was catching me clean. It was a good atmosphere though, I was learning from it and not getting hurt because he wasn't loading up. After we finished I wanted another round, so did he, but the coaches refused. I didn't like that at the time but can respect it. Third place I trained I was going to spar with a girl, the trainer told me 'if you hurt her, I will hurt you'. I didn't mind that, wouldn't have hurt her anyway but coach is just looking out for weaker people and making the rules clear ahead of time.
So in my experience coaches have a good attitude towards guys who are too aggressive or who could potentially hurt somebody. Sounds like your guy is a bully. I know some gyms have that kind of tough, punishing mentality and for a pro or elite-level amateur maybe that can work. But not for beginners.

Sparring the girl, did it feel like you were sparring a porcelain doll? It did for me and this woman held some sort of a womans title.
As for the punishing mentality, if you can't take it with your mind how will you ever take it with your body?
Might as well weed them out early, unless the gym is only there for profit.
A gym that you want to find is the gym that is there to build a future champion. Not to turn an immediate profit. ........Rockin'Last edited by Rockin'; 03-19-2022, 12:27 PM.
