    trying to strengthen my core

Deadlifts, squats and power cleans are the best exercises for hitting your lower back and obliques. Clean and press/jerk are my all time favourite lifts, it feels like they hit pretty much every muscle in your body.

The best exercise for the obliques I am aware of are twisting hanging leg raises.

Just hang from a pull up bar with the arms straight and shoulders tight and lift you legs, straight, bent or knees only, depending on how strong you are, and stop at the top of the motion parallel to the floor.
Then then twist towards the right by contracting your left obliques, and twist left by contracting the right. Then lower the legs and repeat the whole thing.

For the lower back, if you have access to heavy weights deadlift, but to work it properly you need to use really heavy weights and good form. If you dont, try bridging, it is equally effective and variations which involve the arms strengthen the spinal erectors and the traps like crazy too and decompress the spine. Also general pains in the back and legs will reduce with advanced bridging.
