My trainer told me not to use the philly shell and if i did i'd get K.Od. He said only Mayweather can use it. How advanced is the philly shell? - does anyone on this forum have success with it or opinions on it? Asking for advice, thanks.

If you don't have a trainer that knows the ins and outs of that stance so they can teach them to you then it's best to not use it. In my opinion.

If your trainer thinks Mayweather is the only guy in history to successfully use the Philly shell maybe you should look into his credentials...
But maybe what he meant is that you should start out learning the classic meat and potatoes stuff before trying specialized styles, plus what Shoulder said.

I wouldn't take his "only Mayweather can use it" comment too literally, I think he's trying to tell you he's not well versed in it to teach it to you or he wants you to learn more traditional defensive methods first. Listen to your coach unless you're considering switching trainers soon, otherwise it will only lead to issues. Consider talking to him about learning certain components of the 'philly shell' such as rolling punches and parrying (common defensive moves for all defenses) to see if he feels comfortable with you transitioning to that particular stance.

Thanks for all replies. All very intelligent answers.
Eventually I'm going to have to find a trainer i can communicate better with and understand my goals in the sport, but for now this old guy still has knowledge i can learn from and i'll have to take everything with a grain of salt (as you always should anyway)
