Hello this is my first post. Im a huge boxing fan and was thinking about actually competing in the future( just amatuer though). Can you guys tell me what its like. How dangerous is it. People say that the head gear doesnt really protect you. Im 19 yrs old and in college. I have no prior boxing training but id say that im very physically fit as ive played football and ran track back in highschool, and i also started wrestling as club sport in college. Do you think i can make it at such a late starting age. I just really love boxing its litterally all i think about lmao. Any advice?

Well, the first step you need to take is joining a local boxing gym. Since you have no prior boxing training you need to learn the fundamentals and be ready to spar when they feel you're ready, just because you're physically fit does not mean you're in fighting condition just yet. From then on it'll be up to you and your trainer/s when you're ready to start competing. 19 is still very young, plenty of time and good luck.Last edited by _original_; 07-15-2014, 05:15 PM.

Hi,
Amatuer boxing is fast paced, it can be dangerous, hit and not get hit back. Which is very hard.
You have to pass medicals to be able to fight, headguards mainly stop cuts, and to protect against clashing of heads. You say your very fit, but dont underestimate boxing training and fighting, its all on another level. High intensity, fast pace whilst keeping focused and defense really good. You may think your fit now but i guarantee you have to be 100% more fitter than you are now.
Your at a good age to start, you have nothing to loose, maybe you might not like getting hit in the face or taking body shots or maybe you will.
One thing i will say though dont feel intimidated going to a boxing gym, they are amongst the best places to be, no egos and everyone learns off eachother. Get involved and good luck!!

Find a good gym with a solid reputation.. There is a lot of crap gyms that will throw you to the wolves.. A good coach/gym will take their time developing your skills, fundamentals, and will have you do a lot of sparring before having your first fight, and will match you properly when you do fight..
If you have zero experience and the trainer is trying to get you a fight within a month or 2 I would have my doubts.. You should really pay your dues in the gym learning the basics, and them sparring to get comfortable, usually takes a few months before your ready to compete, otherwise they will just throw you in and you will get blasted and lose interest in the sport..
There was a rival gym in the area that was notorious for just throwing guys in the ring after a week or 2, maybe a month of training, and many of their fighters never lasted more than 2,3 fights because they just weren't prepared properly and became disheartening after a bad loss or 2
