What is it that gives someone a good chin?

I've always been interested in this because it's crazy to see people like muhammad ali take all kinds of bombs and stay on their feet, meanwhile you got people like Seth Mitchell who've been knocked out by shots that dont even seem that hard at all.

I know a good chin is something you're born with but I have trouble believing that that's all it comes down to.

i think it's hard to tell because it also depends on whether you see the punch coming or not... when you dont seee it, it's like a flyin bomb..

Keeping your chin tucked and guarded is a good start..

Then I also think a fighters mentality also plays a part.. I think if you panic and are scared of the ko when in exchanges I think your more likely to get stopped, than a fighter that just focuses on the fight itself and isn't that worried.. You can't get careless or you will pay the price, but I think if you worry about the ko, then it's like a self fulfilling prophecy

Some of it is genetics but building a strong neck and traps can help you absorb punches better.

          above mentioned

and if you notice come forward fighters have better chins - that is no coincidence, they are more used to getting hit

its all related - e.g. mexicans are come forward fighters generally speaking and they have great chins, genetics plays role

Genetics, strong neck/traps/legs, seeing the punches coming.

it's dependent some on the bones in the face, the musculature of the jaw and neck. there's also the brain and the inside of the skull, which you obviously can't see. some brains and skulls react better to the pounding and inertia.

it's also got a lot to do with conditioning as well. in fact, i'd say conditioning is most important. your legs just won' tbe there if you aren't in shape and you're getting pounded on.

Learning to be relaxed without giving up intensity! When you tense up in the ring your magnify your opponents power. Accepting that punches will land is part of your mental preparations. Also being prepared to out punch your opponent 3 to 1 is a goal you set and that helps you to accept the shots mentally. What the others have said are the physical preparations needed.

                  Born with it baby,
of course other factors help a fighter withstand punches for the duration of a fight but to me having a good chin indicates the ability to absorb the force a solid punch without going down and that is god given.

Many fighters with good chins have been stopped from other factors (endurance, heart, etc...) but not from a solid shot to the chin that separates him from his senses thus the stoppage of said fighters does not I my mind detract from their chin.
