Concussions? Or am I being a Baby?

Started sparring about 6 months ago and almost every time afterwards i get headached of various degrees. There have been 2 times that have worried me because the headaches last up to 3 full days. They arent normal feeling headaches, they almost feel more internal, if that makes sense.

On monday there were only 3 of us at class. 2 guys that have dozens of amuater fights and me (newbie to sparring). The drill was to go 50% all punches sparring and the goal was to throw 100 punches in a round as the coaches tick the punches on one of those tickers. After class my brain literally felt numb, again hard to explain. The head ache isnt excruciating but it is a deep internal ache. They arent accompanies by nausea but i have def felt a little dizzy at work the next day. I didnt take any huge shots but a lot of good ones. So accumulating hits more them one big blow. I just ordered the rival intell headgear hoping this will help since the headgear i have now is like a $30 set that i bought at my gym. Is this worth worrying about? Should i get a better mouth guard too? I am open to any input

Have you gone to the doctor at all? Just to get a checkup to be on the safe side, make sure you didn't get a minor concussion.

No i have not. I was not sure of the severity. I am assuming what i explained is not normal?

doesnt sound normal to me. if im being honest and you dont have aspirations of making a living from boxing, you should probably find another sport. best to chat to a doctor first though, obviously, but cant imagine they'd encourage you to continue. thats probably not the news you wanted to hear though, sorry.

Sounds like a concussion. Stay off sparring ASAP and get checked out.

where in the world are you sparring against guys with dozens of fights as a novice and having coaches mandate that you throw 100 punches?

first thing you need to do is stop sparring at this gym. you're taking way too many shots from guys who know what they are doing and who are being incentivized by coaches to beat the tar out of you.

next, head to the doctor and get a baseline ct scan and get checked out hopefully by a neurologist.

there's no such thing as "being a baby" where the health of your freaking brain is concerned, man. that **** is way, way too important to f#ck up for a sport in which you participate casually.

            best of luck.

Ive fought and sparred for years, taken head shots in proper fights with 12oz gloves and that sounds like concussion to me.

I don't like the sound of your gym where you eat 50 or 60 shots a round from guys with way more experience than you.

I really appreciate all of your guys responses. I am on day 3. This morning i still had a slight headache but it dispursed throughout the day and i have been headach3 free for a few hours. Is it still worth going to the doctors?

Yes, there are times in my gym where guys from the fight team will come down to intermediate to train and the drill definitley seemed extreme. I work a sales job where taking time off is very frowned upon so going taking a whole day to get scanned is probably a no go. How long should i take off sparring?

Until the pain subsides AND after you find a better quality gym that knows how to spar. Telling your fighters they have to throw 100 punches per round is downright dumb.

The amount of bouts these sparring partners have had doesn't really matter. What matters is their skill level. Have they won any tournaments or titles that you know of? If they are usa boxing level then you shouldn't be sparring them. There is nothing for you to offer them in terms of training. At 6 months of sparring you should be very comfortable in the ring, not getting jarred in there.

A better headgear wont help you and a dang mouth piece wont either. Get to your doctor asap and stop sparring immediately.

Some people just aren't meant to take punches man. I used to spar with this super tough Puerto-Rican cat who took mad punishment. He was rough, but easy to hit. He saw a doctor and had to retire.
