Boxing trainer kept telling me to keep my feet close to the ground?

Confused me, I move laterally very well having played a lot of football and basketball.

I can get from point a to point b just as fast as if my feetwere kept closer to the ground.

    Why do trainers do this?

Because if you get punched or pushed while doing your ballet hops you have a lot more chance to lose balance.

Nah, well maybe--I just moved how I would playing basketball. He just said my feet were leaving the ground too much, i was not jumping

Boxers slide if your foot is up you're off balance. Even when you move you're supposed to be balanced and in a punching position

B/C its impossible to box on your toes(Unless your name's Tyson Fury) for 10-12 rds even Ali couldn't do it. It's more efficient to box flat footed.

Sometimes if your opponent is really tall, like a foot or more taller than you, you'll have to jump to land a proper hook on him.

I ride a bicycle to work, does that make me a great NASCAR driver?

It's boxing, not basketball. He gave you good advice. It's up to you to listen and take his advice or ignore it. Good boxing trainers know what works in the ring and that is what they teach learning boxers. You can move very quickly in all directions with both feet close to the ground and stay on balance. There is no need for leaps or giant steps that may leave you off balance and vulnerable.
