    Nervous to start

    Hi all,

I am looking to loose weight get fit and build some muscle. A friend said boxing training is a good way to do this.

I have been thinking about it over the last 2 weeks, I have looked into it and it seems the way to go, however I am scared to start..

I know that sounds silly, but I am a really shy guy and I am having trouble taking the plunge and starting. I know I don't have to get in the ring with anyone, I also know I will help me with confidence and focus.

    But I am nervous.

    Any suggestions?

    hey, welcome to the board!

check my tips on azza's thread about getting hit. if you get into boxing, you will find them usefull in helping you get over the fear of boxing.

you said you're shy, well, boxing will definitely help you overcome that. just make sure not to become too ****y when you win your state's golden gloves tournament!

also, if you're contemplating boxing mainly for getting in shape, you won't have to worry about brutal sparring that you may hear about. that's more for people who are interested in having an extensive amateur record or are considering going pro. you will likely do some sparring, but it won't be as intensive.

overall, don't worry so much!!!!! i mean, what's the worst that can happen?

Okay, you want to accomplish several goals:
      1) You want to lose weight
      2) Get fit
      3) Build muscle

For the first 2 goals, boxing can indeed accomplishe these. For the third goal, maybe you'd like to add some serious weight training to your schedule.

You dont even need to spar if your worried about that, boxing is obviously a great way to lose weight considering the amount of different exercises are used just aslong as you have a coach who helps you 1 on 1 and is contiously showing you on how to do things and showing different workouts, even take the things home you learn and do them at home aswell as just the gym.

And dont be scared to ask about exercises im always asking my coach what i can do to build muscle in certain areas and he usually knows about 5 different exercises for that perticular muscle.

But your going to want to really lose weight and believe you can if you want to do this because it can be hard work at times, just never give up it gets easier as time goes by trust me, and if you cant do something just keep on going at it until you get it right, good luck!

            You don't box do you.
all three of those objectives will be accomplished by boxing, Weights in boxing isn't for building muscle. Its for adding strength to complete the balance of Max strength, Speed and Endurance.

My advice throw your worries to the side. Get in there and do it. Like Nike says Just do it. You have to love it to compete and I mean Love it like no other, But for fitness purposes. Have fun. You won't find another training program that is so likely to have you in the gym on a consistant basis which is what you need consistancy. GET IN THERE. Your shyness will even be overcome this sport does wonders for ones esteem. You may love it

There was a time when there was a boxing club on every street corner. Sadly times have changed. You will be lucky if there is a boxing club in your area. You will be even luckier if that club is worth training at. Just read some of these posts where kids are complaining about smoking in the gym and getting their heads punched by more experienced sparring partners. There is no excuse for this sort of thing but it goes on. Check out the club thoroughly before you decide to entrust your life to somebody else's care. Joe Frazier's book, Box Like the Pros wil give you some guidelines.
