On this day in 1881, Henry McCarty, alias William H. Bonney, alias Kid Antrim, alias Billy the Kid was shot and killed by Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
Accounts vary, but late at night, Pat Garrett went to the home of Pete Maxwell and, leaving his deputies on the porch, went into the bedroom of Pete Maxwell to ask about the whereabouts of Bonney.
Meanwhile, Billy Bonney left the room he was staying to go to Pete Maxwell’s to cut some beef to cook. He had no shoes on, and only had a butcher knife, and allegedly a pistol tucked in his waistband.
Billy saw Garrett’s deputies, and repeatedly asked who it was while backing into Pete Maxwell’s room, where Pat Garrett was sitting on the edge of the bed conferring with Pete.
“Pete who are those men outside?” Billy asked.
As soon as Pat Garrett ascertained it was Billy, he pulled his revolver and fired, hitting Billy in the chest. There was a gasp and then silence.
Pat Garrett and Pete Maxwell ran out of room. Pat would not go back in until he was sure the Kid was dead.
Billy was buried the next day.
