    Tm Witherspoon

Someone i know recently met him and are maybe starting a business venture together, he's give me some signed gloves etc. I was just wondering if anybody could tell me anything about him or what they remember they thought of him back in the day?
I've seen his fight with larry holmes which was a good fight and could've gone either way.

I dont know much about him but i remember him beating Frank Bruno. I also seem to remember him being Clinton Woods' trainer for a while, he took him to philladelphia to train.

Great fighter and a wasted talent. Lost early in his career to Larry Holmes in a close fight and defeated Frank Bruno. Beat Bonecrusher Smith then fought him again with the winner to meet Mike Tyson. Something very dodgy about this fight and I think Witherspoon threw the fight but for what reasons I'm not sure. Smith knocked him down 3 times in the first round and the fight was stopped.

An inshape Tim Witherspoon possesed the tools to beat a prime Tyson, I always said this even back in the day before Tyson got beat.

Witherspoon had a devastating right hand. And he plowed through alot of the top HW's in the 80's. I agree with Hurricane- he would have been a definite problem for Mike.

Witherspoon had his chance. He could not beat Tony Tubbs, or he would have faced prime Tyson in 87/88.
Many of Tyson's beaten opponents had the TOOLS to beat him, putting them together and win is a whole other thing.
                Very good fighter though.

                  Hurricane72,
Listen, that post is one of the very best descriptions ever offered on any fighter on these forums. I tried repping you, but I still got to spread some around first.
The reason why Tim went down 3 times in that fight w/ the Bonecrusher is because of the financial problems he was having with Don King. I have that fight taped from HBO and Tim's granite chin was still strong that night. If you ever get the chance to review that fight or read about it, Witherspoon was disgruntled about several things, including his purse & contract with DK.

I always liked Witherspoon a lot. But his downfall was his mindset. He never figured out that if he trained hard and stayed in shape and fought whoever was in front of him, he would eventually get the BIG paydays he craved. As much as I liked him and respect him as a fighter, he was what I would call "pouty" when it came to conditions. If he didn't get his way, he pouted and "punished" the promoter by dogging training camp. In the overall scheme of things, he only hurt himself.
He had the physical tools, natural ability and the big overhand right to have been a much higher regarded fighter than he turned out being.
I wish him well in all that he does and I'm thankful for the great memories he did provide his fans when he did fight hard.

Great point Terry A! Witherspoon repotedly made only $90,000 for fight with Bruno and Carl King made $5million sitting in the fifth row! Apparently Witherspoon was hit with the fight bill and after deductions he was left with $90,000.
