Good fighter, nice right hand, probably didn't train as hard as he could have. The best of the lost generation, though not the most talented.

Great fighter who reminded me of Ken Norton, i once asked Larry Holmes about Norton and Witherspoon. And he said Norton was the harder puncher but he thought Witherspoon was a more skilled boxer. Witherspoon had great technique blocking Holmes jab with his right glove then countering with a rising jab over the top. Witherspoon had a lot of talent but threw it away, but a lot of Heavyweights in the 80s had great potential and threw it Greg Page, Tony Tubbs, Pinklon Thomas, the list goes on and on.

Witherspoon was a very talented fighter. He had quick hands, good chin, good skills and excellent power, especially in his "can opener" right hand. If he were in his prime today, he'd be wearing some belts, no doubt about it. He was real good. A 2-time heavyweight champ (1984, 1986), he fought &beat many good fighters, including: Renaldo Snipes, James Tillis, Greg Page, James Smith, Tony Tubbs, Frank Bruno, Carl Williams, &Al Cole. He faced a lot of tough, young, heavyweights late in his career, far past his prime in his late 30's &40's such as Larry Donald (LUD12), Jimmy Thunder (LUD10), Andrew Golota (LUD10), Monte Barret (LSD10), &Lou Savarese (LTKO5). He had a great fight with Ray Mercer in 1996, that he lost (10 round UD), it was close, and I remember watching it at the time thinking "man, these guys are a couple of tanks..they don't feel pain!".

He turned pro in 1979 &had his last fight in 2003.
