His story went . . . During the fight Johnson's wife was in conclave with representatives of the federal government. Once a deal has been struck she returned to her seat in the 25th round and singled JJ it was done, so he could then throw the fight.

Yes, Johnson carried Willard for 25 rounds while his wife negotiated.

He needed an argument to get around the fact that the fight went 26 rounds and so he conjured up that story. And wouldn't let it go.

Of course the entire thing falls apart when you realize Johnson doesn't return to the U.S. until 1920, five years after the fight and still had to serve one year in prison for the Mann conviction anyway.

It is amazing what people can talk themselves into believing.

Johnson won the Burns fight as he pleased,he deliberately prolonged it so as to inflict the maximum amount of humiliation and punishment,ditto the Jeffries fight.

In the 13th round the Police entered the ring and spoke to Burns,concerned for his welfare. In the 14thrd , when Johnson opened up and went to town on Burns, flooring him heavily , the Police stepped in and stopped the fight . Nobody is clear as to who ceased the filming.
I began this thread with verified quotes from Johnson the day after his losing fight with Willard,freely admitting he lost the fight on its merits,that Willard was too strong for him.
Johnson, meeting Curley to collect his money the day after,revealed that Jess had knocked out two of his gold teeth.

There was no deal for Johnson to be allowed to return to the US and be left alone by the authorities,his subsequent wanderings around the globe , and his immediate arrest when he stepped back on US soil prove this beyond doubt.

Johnson embroidered many stories and made himself the hero of them,he sold his "confession" of a fake loss to Fleischer for a couple of hundred dollars because he was broke.
