The Cruiserweight division... was it really necessary?

The Cruiserweight division was created around the late 1970's when heavyweight boxers were weighing more than they did in the past, and it was seen as unfair that fighters weighing 190lbs would have to face heavies weighing 220lbs. However, notable cruiserweights like Evander Holyfield, and David Haye add weight and move on to heavyweight anyway, so my question is, is the cruiserweight division really necessary and has it partly led to the demise of talent in the heavyweight division?

Yes, as the size difference between 175 lb light heavyweights and giant heavyweights grew larger and larger, a middle ground was needed between the largest gap in weight in all of the boxing weight classes.

In fact, I think another weight class addition may be needed as heavyweights get even bigger.

      Light Heavyweight: 175
      Cruiserweight: 190
Heavyweight: 191-225 (for guys too big to be cruisers but too small to compete w/ giants)

      Super Heavyweight 226-unlimited

I think super-heavyweight should be from 240lbs onwards, and a super-heavyweight division would be BORING as hell, and have some terrible boxers, the perfect heavyweights should be from 190- 230 lbs.

There are Heavyweights and Super Heavyweights in the Olympics, is that right?

Let's say they make the Super Heavyweights. Then what happens? Who will be fighting? As it is today, we are looking for a boxer as good as just to lose decently against Klitshkos and we can't find him.

So, at S.Heavies we have the Klitshkos vs ... some really poor fat guy who is willing to get a beating for some dollars
And at the Heavies we have who? Haye? Come on!

Also for Cruserweights, I'm not sure we trully need this division. The good Cruisers are moving at Heavy or Lt Heavy anyway.

It gives small heavyweights a chance to be competitive without starving themselves to make 175. I'm against a super heavyweight division though.

That is EXACTLY MY opinion........ you know, I think I'm becoming A real fightfanSHO fan myself....... that new division is needed but I would expand it to 190 -215,...... just like most HW fights were in the old days, I wouldn't go all the way to 230 as you would starve the Super-HW division too much,..... man, nobody would watch them otherwise. It also makes ATG rankings a lot easier and FAIRER.

It's the only "super-junior class" that's actually needed IMO.

I think the division is fine. You've used 2 Cruiserweights as an example, how many featherweights have stepped up to super feather etc.

It's not a very deep division, but I think it serves it's purpose more than what a Super heavyweight division would.
