If you're not British it's hard to imagine just what a monumental figure he was in the public sporting consciousness. I remember seeing him on TV when I was a wee tot (he'd long retired by then) and even at that time I was struck by how warm, genuine and funny he was, like an affable grandad. He was one of those figures who have become so ingrained in the cultural landscape that you think he'll be around forever, which is why I'm genuinely shocked and saddened by his death.
Whatever you may have thought about him as a fighter (and some of the comments I've read have been less than tactful) you simply cannot fault him as a role model and absolute gentleman.
RIP Sir Henry Cooper. You were one of the greats.
No, you do not have to be British, most of those comments were ignorance in it's purest form. RIP Sir Enry.
Pardon me Uncle...... Slow down a bit. Cooper did NOT beat Ali...Period. He was TKO'd twice, in about the 4-5th rds each time. Bad cuts, which had him lose many fights. He hardly ever completed a fight without his eyebrows streaming blood.
The "cut" that Dundee(I think) was supposed to have inflicted on Ali's glove, in a fight BEFORE he won the title, is PURE MYTH. There was a very tiny tear which was of no consequence, and, if you watch the video, you will find IF YOU WANT TO.. that is, that there was NO time delay.
Sorry!
No need to apologise for your ignorance.
Let's look at the facts. 'A tiny tear of no consequence' - I suppose you were ringside? Maybe i'll trust Angelo Dundee's take on things, as he perhaps seems to be better placed than you to reflect on the fight:
"Clay stood up and started slowly towards Angelo Dundee who - in violation of the rules - guided him into the corner. A still-dazed Clay got up off the stool after several seconds, but Dundee sat him back down and used smelling salts to help Clay recover (this was a serious violation of the rules). Dundee has since claimed to have opened small tear in one of Clay's gloves and told the referee that his fighter needed a new pair of gloves, thus delaying the start of the 5th round." No offence, but i'll take Dundee's account over yours, primarily as he actually was in the corner, whereas you are simply ******.
The RULES were changed after this fight so that a spare pair of gloves were always required at ringside. But let's maybe ignore that too. While we're at it, let's ignore the smelling salts as well. Always best to paper over rampant cheating when it doesn't fit your argument.
At least our Enery landed the 'Parkinson's shot' before Ali and Dundee had the chance to bring further shame upon our great sport with their shameless flouting of the rules.
How can uncle buck make fun of ali's parkinsons like this. What pleasure do you get from making light of such a devastating disease. Your comments are not funny and certainly aint clever. This post is about the death of a british legend and should not be used for your sick views about ali. You must be a very strange messed up individual. RIP sir henry you will be missed.
