    ^^that's about right

Some get into a sparring session ready to practice their technique and some to hurt the other dude. And ussualy the one that's there to do something constructive is caught offguard by the strength of the other one especialy if heavier than him. It's just an act of selfishness and lack of respect from the bigger guy and should be answered the same way IMO.

sparring is for one to work on what they feel needed to work on most...if its power so be it if its jab let it b...i've sparred many rounds where my coach wouldnt even let me throw a punch...i've sparred where all i can do is jab....for what he asked tho it sounded to me he was tryna fig out how to stop a guy comen forward more than he was tryna find out if he can throw harder punches....

        Thanks for the replies all.

I think some of you are confused though, Im not asking about throwing hard to practise power shots or to go to war with the guy, kbpoetree got it right, im asking about throwing hard to stop the other guy bulldozing forward.

Well you definitely wouldn't want to exchange punches with a guy who has 30lbs on you, so you would focus on boxing, staying out of trouble and getting the most out of the spar, learning how to deal with a bigger stronger guy. Standing there trying to load up on him would not be a great idea, since he might do it back and the spar just becomes a sloppy brawl, with you on the losing end most likely.

I get into a sparring session just to fight normally and do whatever my coach says. We always go hard, unless obviously you are sparring a beginner or something. When I spar with my main sparring partner, or at another gym, it is pretty much a fight, with full intensity, and trying to pull off whatever our coach wants us to do. You don't go in looking to KO someone, because it most likely won't work and a good fighter will make you pay hard for that ****. You just go in looking to fight effectively and do whatever you need to do.

Working power? You can do that on a bag without hurting someone. Sparring is to work on a lot of things, but power is not one of them. In all of my years of boxing, I have never once heard a coach say to a fighter, "Hey, get your stuff on your sparring, and I really want you to focus and work on power".

No, sparring is to work on techniques and skill(Such as you mentioned, defense, jab, ect. Not power).

I don't throw with full power because they can retaliate and knock me the hell out probably.

Different gyms have different rules. However if the guy is trying to take your head off and he outweighs you big time then you are totally within your right to do the same back. However if the guy is being respectful you should only hit him with the power he is hitting you. If your trying to kill him expect the same back!! Generally though if someone is taking too much advantage because they are ibgger than you, don't spar them.

I very rarely throw with full power when sparring, other heavyweights or smaller guys. The only time i will try to hurt someone on purpose if is thinks its acceptable to throw with full power.

So do what you want, but don't complain when said better guy decides he should throw with full power too.

theres a heavy weight at the gym who i spar with (i weight 51 kgs) and he wears no headgear when we spar and just walks through my hardest shots which is pretty disheartening hahahaha its good but because i learn how to take shots from bigger guys (although he doesnt hit me anywhere near as hard as he could) and we both get in a good bit of fitness work because i have to move alot to keep away from him =]
